Scott Freebass fell in love with hip hop and house music at a very young age. Growing up on Chicago's south side during the 1980's, he recalls listening to his older brother's tape collection (remember tapes?) and memorizing verses from the hip hop legends of yester-year. His love for the music progressed to DJing, when he submitted his first mix CD for a chance to compete in a DJ competition at the famous Smartbar nightclub. Out of hundreds of entries, Scott was among the 8 djs who were chosed to compete, and it's been on ever since.

After a 5-year stint at the Universilty of Illinois in Champaign (yes, he graduated), Scott continued spinning at many of Chicago's famous nightclubs including Vision, Sonoteque, Subterranean, and Tini Martini. In 2003, he also linked up with producer and DJ D. Moon to form the two man production outift known as the SoundProphets. The duo quickly became sought after beatsmiths in Chicago's thriving underground hip hop community.

On the production side Scott Freebass has crafted underground hits for a growing roster of artists, including Killa Kat (Loud Records finalist), V.I.R.U., and Kev Turner. He's also not afraid to step up to the mic, having dropped hot 16's on a handful of the Soundprophets' past singles.

The fittingly titled "Frantic Meditation," an instrumental journey through his diverse range of sounds, is Scott Freebass' latest release and first solo effort. Having composed, mixed, and mastered the entire release himself, one can clearly see why his brand of beats will soon become a staple in the music diet of both hip hop and electronic enthusiasts alike.

The official d.Moon blog (coming soon)

(DJ) d.Moon a.k.a. Duke Highpoint.

Over a decade has passed since (DJ) d.Moon (Derek Moon) first hit the airwaves as one of the hosts of “Blackmoon”, a weekly hip-hop showcase featured on the University of Maryland’s WMUC radio. The first show marked the first time d.Moon actually played music for a public audience. Though he was a little apprehensive, wondering whether or not anyone would even listen to the late night program, he soon found himself at ease due to the glowing response he was receiving from callers asking him to keep his set rolling long after he was supposed to end.

d.Moon never looked back. Soon after he began on the radio station that d.Moon found himself playing house parties all over campus and in the Washington DC metro area.

It was a classmate of Moon’s who approached him about whether he knew of anyone who could provide beats for his upcoming hip-hop release. The same night d.Moon purchased his first drum machine. Two days later Moon sold his first beat. d.Moon has been producing tracks for artists representing all genres of music, for over 10 years. Known for his ability to merge styles and sounds from all over the musical spectrum, d.Moon is a reliable source of unique soundscapes, and head-nodding groves. His style can be classified as varied, but always accessible. From melodic relaxing ballads, to soulful rearrangements,, to heavy bass-laden funk, d.Moon feels comfortable crafting sounds no matter the genre.

d.Moon credits his range to years of digging through his older brother’s crates of classic soul, rock and blues LP’s. Growing up he idolized artists like Marvin Gaye, Roy Ayers, Pink Floyd, Stevie Wonder, and Lou Rawls. His role models included legendary producers such as Quincy Jones, and David Axelrod. d.Moon really came into his own during hip-hops golden age, analyzing raps lyrics with his friends and fawning over hip-hop beats by DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Dr. Dre, and others.

After relocating to Chicago in 2002, Moon teamed up with fellow producer Trevor Williams to form Soundprophets Productions. Since its inception the Soundprophets have amassed a catalog of beats, and collaborations with a host of hip-hop MC’s such as Iomos Marad, V.I.R.U, Kev Turner (Philadeplahia), and Kataclixmic. He has also been behind the boards for several rock and electronic projects including a soon to be release from his collaboration with musical virtuoso Ajay Malghan of the Undercover Monks.

d.Moon occasionally returns to his DJ roots as (DJ) d.Moon. Since he relocated to Chicago he has shared the decks with Chicago DJ’s Mass Transit, DJ Trew, King Hippo and Gogo. Moon has already performed at a variety of Chicago venues including Subterranean, Darkroom, Beat Kitchen, Sweet Alice, Tini Martini, The Silver Room, Elbo Room, and a handful of house parties and galleries.

The future is indeed promising for d.Moon, and music fans should be excited for the many projects that d.Moon has been working on for release in the upcoming months.

It is indeed a good time to be a music fan.
